Balham put in one of their best performances of the season to claim the points against high flying Banstead Athletic on a dark, dank, night at The Wibb’. Some of the play and the goals scored were of the highest order. The outstanding, Jack Robinson, helped himself to a brace. He rounded the keeper for the first, in the opening half, having been slipped through cutely by Tino Carpene, who had another excellent game. His second was a superb solo effort as he picked the ball up just inside the opposition’s half and took off towards goal like Usain Bolt. Having ripped through the middle of the Banstead defence, with an ideal combo of skill and speed, he rifled the ball home in scorching fashion. An unecessary blind back pass from midfield, when the game was very much in Balham’s grasp, gave the away side a chance to get off the mark, which they took. No sooner was it announced though, on the tannoy, than James Adebayo regained the two goal advantage that Balham had garnered previously. This exciting encounter wasn’t dead yet however as a goalkeeping error, with fifteen minutes to go, gave Banstead the chance to get something from a game they had been outplayed in. The otherwise safe, secure, Haydn Read, who has been in top form between the sticks for Balham this season, had to pull off one stunning save in the final minutes, but thanks to that and resolute defending Balham held out for a much deserved win.
