This was an untypical Balham performance but one that was no less satisfying than when victory has been achieved playing champagne football. It was a dig in, grind it out win in a game that had few chances. Both sides were very well organised and breaching the Epsom & Ewell dam, which had gone a long time without any cracks appearing, proved extremely difficult. Eventually however, midway through the second half, top scorer Ibrahim Olutade headed home from a corner. It looked on the cards that this rare headed goal from the prolific Olutade would be the only goal of the game but, at the death, James Adebayo capitalised on a mistake to double Balham’s advantage and make a chirpy changing room in Chipstead, where the home side ground share, even chirpier.
