The key thing in tight games, against teams that park the bus and try and hit you on the counter attack, or score from a set piece, is not to make any mistakes. Unfortunately, one made in the first half proved the deciding factor in this immensely frustrating game on a soggy, boggy, pitch within shouting distance of Staines. Balham dominated possession and territory but weren’t anywhere near their incisive best in the final third and as a result failed to hit the back of the net for the second game in a row. They can consider themselves unlucky not to come away with at least a point, based on the balance of play and having what looked like two cast iron penalties denied them by the man in the middle. At the end of the day though, you make your own luck and on this occasion Balham didn’t do enough to ensure that they came away with something, if not everything.
