The Balham Under 18 Youth team’s first game of the season was their first ever appearance in the FA Youth Cup, away to Ryman League side, Whyteleafe FC. Although the team arrived in confident mood, with a number of key players missing it was always going to be a big ask to come away victorious. Despite the final scoreline suggesting otherwise though this was a very tight game which Balham can have regrets about not winning. The key moments came halfway into the second period when, with the score at 3-1, Dominic Simpson-Last having netted for Balham, Whyteleafe conceded a penalty and were reduced to ten men. Unfortunately for Balham the penalty was saved and to compound their frustration the Whyteleafe keeper almost immediately pulled off a stunning double save. Balham hearts were broken, but they continued to fight until, as the game drew to a close, Whyteleafe scored again to guarantee their place in the next round.
