Balham’s Youth team suffered a crushing defeat in this quarter final of the Grant McLelan Cup away to Abbey Rangers FC. It proved to be a case of young men against boys as the much older, bigger, stronger, quicker and extremely talented Abbey suffocated the very young team from Balham. The boys from SW12 have been developing nicely, having only lost one of their previous eight games and that to a last minute winner in the last minute of extra time in the league cup. This was a step too far however, a step taken too early in their development. Hopefully they will learn from it and it will serve as a marker for where they want to get to, or even surpass in the next year or two. As they left on the night though, for the sanctuary of the M3, they were battered, bruised, bewildered and delighted to be heading home from Addlestone Moor.
