This league cup game had everything. Played at a ferocious pace it was of the highest quality, as acknowleged by the match officials afterwards and was played in the right spirit. The only downside and it is a huge one from a Balham perspective, is that the game was lost to a goal scored with the last kick of extra time. Balham had taken a first half lead when Tyrell Butler, making his starting debut, lobbed the Croydon Athletic keeper. They possibly should have been further ahead at the break, having missed a couple of opportunities when hitting the back of the net was much easier than missing the target, but the game had been nip and tuck, which it continued to be until it’s heartbreaking conclusion. Having been one up Balham found themselves 2-1 down before Butler scored his second to restore parity. A defining moment came soon afterwards when Balham missed a harshly awarded penalty and so the game went into an extra time which yielded a triumphant twist for the Rams but a tragic one for the Blazers.
