Balham’s sixth season in the Southern Youth League was another incredibly successful one. The squad, most of whom have come through the club’s age group system, played some excellent football to win the West Division and finish as overall SYL Runners Up. Unfortunately the Southern Youth League decided not to continue running a youth league so Balham and several other teams have moved over to the new CCL under 18s league. The CCL will be breaking new boundaries this season, possibly becoming the only League operating at Step 5/6 with its own youth divisions at both Under 18 and Under 21 levels. There are 16 clubs in the Under-18’s being a mixture of those clubs arriving from the Southern Youth League following the decision of that League to ask the CCL to take it over, plus existing CCL clubs. The 16 clubs in the Under-18 Division are divided into two geographical divisions, Under 18s North and Under 18s South. The League’s Grant-McLellan Youth Cup will be a far larger competition this season, with 26 entries already having been received. The promotion of youth football is a key element of the FA’s ongoing initiatives.
